Our Perspective: Asian American Plays
Warm greetings, friends of theatre. The world has certainly changed since we've last been in touch. Together, we're navigating a health pandemic and the fight for racial justice. The producers of Our Perspective: Asian American Plays stand in solidarity with Black Lives Matter and support the fight for the end of systemic racism. We understand that the concept of Asians as the "model minority" in America was a deliberate plan to suppress other people of color, especially Blacks. As an Asian American play development program, we believe that our stories can't be fully heard until we hear the stories of Blacks, Indigenous, other people of color, and the disenfranchised.

We support the creation of theatrical works that provoke conversation between all demographics, because dialogue is the access point of understanding. Join the conversations by tuning into our Virtual Theatre Artist Panels and by watching FRAGMENTED by Karissa Murrell Myers. Support the conversation by sponsoring a BIPOC writer to participate in our playwriting course and by donating to Our Perspective here. Thank you.

This introductory playwriting course is designed for Chicago based BIPOC writers to develop their individual theatrical voice through writing a ten minute play. Through the practice of writing and investigating works by and about playwrights of color, students will (1) learn the fundamentals of play construction and theory, (2) explore the elements of dramatic tension, and (3) develop a work that best expresses their authentic
voice.

By the end of the course, students will be able to:
1. Write a ten minute play using proper style and format.
2. Generate character-driven stories that will engage an audience.
3. Provide and receive constructive feedback in order to achieve their best work.

We are at a moment in history when supporting and promoting traditionally marginalized voices is more crucial than ever. As AAPI artists, we must resist systemic oppression, by actively creating and disseminating those stories that must be told.

The course is four classes, September 15th-October 6th, 7-9PM, with no drop-ins. We'll meet via Google Meet, you'll receive a link and details before the first class. The course value is $120. If you're unable to pay full price, you may qualify for a sponsored scholarship or sliding scale tuition. Email us for more information. Class is limited to 12 participants. Sign up here.
